The 5 best construction companies in Sydney for seamless building from start to finish

  • Quality of final products: A construction company stands or falls by the quality of the buildings and other structures it produces. We awarded points for businesses that build high-quality final products which stand the test of time.
  • Construction services available: Besides actual construction work, a company should be able to handle associated tasks like financial planning, quality assurance, leasing services, and more. Sustainability programs are great as well. The wider the range of provided services, the better.
  • Reputation and longevity: The most trusted construction companies have been around for a long time, working on all kinds of projects throughout their history. Though a newer company isn’t necessarily a bad one, we gave extra points if a business has been active for many years with many success stories.
  • Customer reviews: While no business is perfect and there’s always something that can be improved, we still prioritised businesses that have mostly positive reviews from customers. If customers articulate exactly why they’re happy, even better.

Building your dream home, or working on a bigger project like an office building, is no small task. Not only will you need to build it from the ground up, but you’ll need support with things like leases and quality assurance.

Fortunately, there are lots of professional construction companies in Sydney that can help turn your vision into a reality. Many of these companies have a long-standing reputation for high-quality work, plus varying specialties and offerings.

The final choice is up to you, but our list below will help you decide.

How much does construction company service cost in Sydney?

Construction companies in Sydney will charge at least $1,800/sqm to build a new house from scratch. Larger or more complex structures, like two-storey homes or buildings, will cost more. Commercial fit-outs start at around $1,500/sqm.

They work with civil and commercial clients, as well as the education, health, and industrial sectors. No matter who you are and your specific needs, Hutchinson can help out.

The company is particularly known for its stellar customer support, with custom solutions for each client, prompt assistance, and willingness to fix any problem — even those they didn’t cause.

We couldn’t find any pricing information on the website, though Hutchinson is actually pretty transparent about its financial performance. Most customer reviews are positive, although a few mentioned some instances of bad work quality and unprofessional conduct by business staff.

Pros

  • Works with many industries
  • Custom solutions for each client
  • Behind-the-scenes support

Cons

Highly appreciative of her excellent service

“I want to express my gratitude to Monique Hamilton for her outstanding post-completion support in addressing the defective works. Setting aside the construction quality, Monique has proven to be a true professional who responds promptly. Despite the issues being the result of a previous defect manager’s oversight, she is committed to sending someone back to rectify them.”

Great builders

“All over it. Great builders. Pride in work.”

Lendlease is a combined real-estate, investment, and construction business. They specialise in all kinds of projects such as office buildings, commercial establishments, apartments, and even industrial structures.

They even work with the aviation industry to improve passenger experience.

What really impressed us with Lendlease was their commitment to social responsibility. The business prioritises sustainability, with annual sustainability reports and other financial disclosures readily viewable.

Lendlease has lots of sparkling feedback from former clients we interviewed, the majority of which gave the company high marks for customer care and an impressive portfolio of projects.

However, there were some reported instances of rude service as well as lack of attention to detail for certain details like bathroom tiling.

Pros

  • Builds structures of all shapes, sizes, and types
  • Also provides real estate and investment services
  • Committed to sustainability
  • Open every day

Cons

  • Some reports of abusive customer service and negligence

An impressive and stress-free experience

“Evelyn Zhou, the Retail Lease Admin Manager is a super friendly, efficient and good personality person.  Though I was a lessee far in WA, Evelyn was always available for all kinds of questions and happy to render her help throughout the entire lease assignment process.”

Utmost professionalism, patience and courtesy

“I had an issue with an NBN installation and was put into contact with Olini, Saer and Glenn. All three went above and beyond to rectify my issue with utmost professionalism, patience and courtesy. Very happy.”

3. John Holland

John Holland is a multi-faceted company that deals in integrated infrastructure, construction, railways, and other such projects.

The business is active in Australia and New Zealand with over 80 projects in those locations, plus a claimed $12.5 billion in contributions to Australia’s GDP over several years.

The company builds just about any type of structure; they’ve done stadiums, airports, healthcare facilities, offices, and more. They can also perform refurbishments and expansions to existing structures.

Apart from physical construction, the John Holland business team assists with finance, leasing, due diligence, and other supportive tasks. While other construction companies provide similar support, we felt that John Holland has the most comprehensive range of services.

This makes the company a great all-in-one solution — probably the most complete one-stop-shop for construction projects.

Finally, they also do “future cities” work — projects that aim to make cities more advanced and better for citizens, while coordinating with governments and other authorities to realise these goals.

The John Holland business website is impressive and informative, but we couldn’t find much information about their business hours. You’ll probably be able to get a response if you give them a call during standard office hours.

Pros

  • Wide range of construction specialities
  • All-in-one construction solution
  • Strong collaboration with government

Cons

  • No listed business hours

Very knowledgeable and friendly

“Great project teams, very knowledgeable and friendly. Easy to work with and understanding of people.”

Exceptional customer service

“Proficient Service from introduction to departure. Staff were friendly, courteous and displayed exceptional customer service.”

Built’s involvement in so many sectors, industries, and projects makes them the best choice if you’re looking for a construction company that coordinates well with other organisations. This is important if you’re a broker or point person with clients to look after, for example.

Specifically, they’re involved in the commercial, education, healthcare, and hospitality industries — and have even worked with military agencies on defence projects. Their portfolio includes heritage buildings, public facilities, offices, and much more.

The company uses digital engineering processes wherever possible, allowing for better collaboration and coordination between all parties involved in a construction project, which echoed client feedback.

However, while Built’s former clients had a lot of positive things to say, there were others who complained about bad building practices and lack of customer communication.

Pros

  • Strong local and international presence
  • Multi-sector collaboration
  • Advanced digital engineering processes
  • Graduate and sustainability programs

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Some complaints of structural quality and poor communication

Exceptional quality

“Exceptional quality of their work, and great communication.”

Richard Crookes Constructions has been active since 1976 as a family-owned company, building its leadership team and taking on government, industrial, and other construction projects.

There’s an office in Sydney, as well as locations in Brisbane, Canberra, Newcastle, and Tamworth.

We were struck by just how many structures RCC has worked on in the past. Their projects include commercial buildings, government offices, temples, gyms, and conference centres, to name a few.

They also handle construction management, cost planning, and digital engineering to support the building work. They’re also committed to an ESG strategy — Environmental, Social, and Governance impacts that benefit the community.

The website even includes the company’s anti-slavery statement.

Most customers love RCC, citing the quality of workmanship, attention to detail, and fantastic customer service. That said, a few clients complained about the business’ careless construction practices and prioritising speed over safety.

Pros

  • Active all over Australia
  • Collaborates with government
  • Strong and diverse portfolio
  • ESG and anti-slavery principles

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Some complaints about careless procedures/actions

Thrilled with the end product

“Have worked with RCC on 4 projects now, all works are completed to a high degree, purchasers are typically thrilled with the end product. Looking forward to working with them again in the future.”

Great quality homes

“Erskenville was a great project. I have no affiliation with RCC, however I did work on this job site as an electrician, and I must say Richard Crookes has a great attention to detail and the overall build is well-constructed. Great quality homes, constructed professionally, and would love to work with them again.”
