The 5 Best German Restaurants in Sydney for Schnitzel Without the Schnit-stress

  • German Menu and Dining Format: We looked for German, Bavarian, or Austrian dishes, recipes, and beers. We also distinguished full-service restaurants from food trucks, event caterers, and daytime deli cafés.
  • Menu and Beverage Variety: We compared schnitzels, sausages, pork knuckle, pretzels, desserts, sharing platters, imported beers, schnapps, and vegetarian or gluten-free choices where offered.
  • Group and Event Fit: We considered communal seating, large-party reservations, sharing menus, private functions, mobile catering, click-and-collect, and catering platters.
  • Pricing and Availability: We checked opening hours, weekend access, minimum-spend rules, surcharges, payment fees, service format, and whether the venue offers lunch, dinner, or daytime café service.

You might usually grab a slice from local pizza stores or visit chicken wing spot, but a proper European deli sandwich hits differently.

If you’re craving the crunch of a pork knuckle or a massive warm pretzel, finding the best German restaurant in Sydney means diving into hearty plates and frothy steins.

We love exploring the city for comfort food, so we’ve rounded up the spots worth checking out when you’re ready for a hearty feast. Grab your appetite and get ready to dig in!

The chicken schnitzel was top notch – juicy and tender
I went to this restaurant with my girlfriend and we ordered Mia’s Bavarian Platter. Obviously, it was too big for two people, but since we love German food, we gave it a try. The chicken schnitzel was top notch – juicy and tender – and I definitely want to try it again. The pork knuckle had crispy skin with juicy meat inside, and the selected sausage was amazing. The sides were a great match with the mains too – especially the sauerkraut and garden salad. On top of that, the owner and staff provided amazing service and were very friendly.

Sometimes, the best European comfort food rolls right up to your party on wheels. Knuckles 2 You is an Austrian-origin, family-run Bavarian food truck and caterer, so they’re a different experience from a traditional restaurant.

The team draws on Austrian family recipes and more than 25 years of hospitality experience to create savoury Bavarian dishes.

They prepare meals fresh to order using locally sourced ingredients, and clients can choose prepaid or pay-as-you-go arrangements.

For events, they can provide customised menus, traditional music, and beer-hall-style tables and chairs. You can also request themed staff and branded elements.

But public events have one important limitation. Because they operate as a mobile catering truck, they can serve alcohol only at privately catered functions covered by their specific license.

  • Customised event menus and setups

The pork knuckles were the best I’ve ever had
Where do I even begin? Words can’t describe how amazing Renate and her team were! We celebrated my husband’s 50th birthday, and everything was absolutely perfect from start to finish. We chose the $100 per person package, which included an entrée, an incredible main meal, and unlimited beer for 2.5 hours. The value for money is unbelievable—I honestly don’t know where else you could get this quality at that price. The food was simply outstanding. The pork knuckles were the best I’ve ever had—better than any German restaurant I’ve been to in Australia…

But it served the best pork knuckle

Knuckles 2 you was a food truck. But it served the best pork knuckle. I crave good crackling, and with their crackling there was no soft or rubbery spots. And was seasoned well. I have tried Una’s, Munich Brauhaus Rocks, Tommy’s in Glebe and the German club. This beat them all! My new go to!

The food never disappoints!
I’ve been coming to Kaiser Stub’n for over 20 years and I’m pleased to say the quality has not changed a bit – the food never disappoints! Amazing flavours, very speedy and friendly service. I was impressed to see that they have a selection of non-alcoholic German beers on the menu, too! I’d suggest not to over-order on the entrees/mains and make sure you leave room for dessert because the Apple strudel is seriously good – it’s a must try. In saying that, you’ve got to get the garlic bread (both kinds), best I’ve ever eaten.

Pork knuckle serve was HUGE and so tender
Amazing hiddden gem. Proper German/Austrian fare – the spft fresh pretzel was phenomenal as a start. We ordered off the special menu: pork knuckle serve was HUGE and so tender, came with kraut and a bread dumpling. The Cheese Kransky was also fantastic. Kids had Vienna Schnitzel – larger than their two faces – breading was crispy, so flavourful! We’ll be back!

The sauerkraut was delicious and not overpowering like some places

Obviously a very popular place I walk there in the morning and there was a steady flow of people in and out the inside has a nice homely feel to it which is a nice contrast to be almost stripped more location. It is a nice recluse. I’m not an expert on German produce but The items in there seem quite genuine and the produce seems very fresh. I got a coffee and a pastrami sandwich both were very nice. The sauerkraut was delicious and not overpowering like some places. The staff were friendly and helpful I recommend checking this…

I am from Germany and I would give more than 5 stars if I could
I am from Germany and I would give more than 5 stars if I could! Such an authentic German butchery with a huge variety of German style sausages, other meats, cheeses and other traditional German sauces, drinks etc. We came here for lunch and ordered the Leberkäse Roll/Brötchen and Kassler and a Bretzel. Prices are very fair. Service was exceptional as well. So happy to have this place in Sydney that brings back memories from home. We will definitely be back 🙂
