Stepping inside a heritage arcade instantly makes you crave something sweet and nostalgic. Haigh’s Chocolates Strand Arcade delivers exactly that, standing out as Australia’s oldest family-owned chocolate maker, with roots going back to 1915.
They still use bean-to-bar production and traditional hand-finishing techniques to craft their milk and dark treats. You can also find anniversary gifts among the boxed truffles, chocolate assortments, and nut clusters.
But it’s worth noting that several products carry warnings about equipment shared with wheat, peanuts, or tree nuts. That means the allergen risk varies by product rather than applying in exactly the same way across the entire range.

You get to choose your chocolate
You’d get a chocolate for every coffee you buy.
Best part is you get to choose your chocolate – definitely try the pyramid, and the wattleseed truffle i think?
The ginger one is pretty strong, so if you like ginger flavoured chocolate, it’s a must try.
Ice chocolate is a bit on the sweet side. Staff’s always friendly though.

3. Koko Black Strand Arcade

Finding a souvenir that truly captures local flavour can be tricky when everything looks identical.
Koko Black Strand Arcade fixes that by brilliantly merging traditional Belgian chocolate-making methods with recognisably Australian ingredients such as lemon myrtle and Davidson plum.
Their handcrafted bars and pralines celebrate native flavours without using artificial additives, colours, or preservatives. The shop also supports sustainably sourced cocoa, which adds another reason to feel good about gifting one of their boxes.
The main downside appears when you order only a couple of bars online. Free standard shipping currently requires an order above the advertised threshold, so smaller deliveries can add another charge to the final cost.
Their chocolates are also really good. Best chocolate shop in Sydney!

They lean on natural ingredients to create rich textures and plenty of distinctive flavour combinations. They also carry a growing lineup of vegan chocolate recipes for shoppers wanting plant-based choices.
A friend recently brought me their dark chocolate cigars, and the roasted cocoa notes lingered beautifully after every bite.
But don’t assume everything in the display case is vegan. Only part of the range is vegan, so you still need to check the product information before building a gift box.

I’ve never seen this store before today but it really caught my eye with the choices of loose mini chocolates, blocks and gelato. Walked away with a bag of assorted chocolates and a few blocks. The intensity of the dark chocolate flavor shines through
I stopped into the shop looking for a piece or two of dark chocolate as a little after-dinner treat. Rahul came out to help me choose, and by the time I was done, I had picked out 7 or 8 different treats—plus an ice cream! If you’re a dark chocolate lover, look no further. The intensity of the dark chocolate flavor shines through in both the chocolates and the ice cream. Rahul was incredibly helpful and genuinely personable. I’ll definitely be back!

The company also manufactures their chocolate products in Sydney, giving the store a stronger local-production angle than a standard reseller.
Just a heads-up: anyone with a severe nut allergy should skip this one. The business warns that even products made without nuts can come into contact with machinery used for nut products, so those items aren’t considered safe for severe allergies.
The chocolate is beautiful
This place is an absolute Sydney institution – family owned and run in the glorious Strand Arcade. The chocolate is beautiful and they have so many different varieties of everything. Totally fresh. My favourite is ordering a big box of mixed dark creams which they will make up while you wait. Go there.

The chocolates are amazing
I have been a long time customer of The Nut Shop and everything I purchase is always fresh and top quality. The chocolates are amazing – much better than anywhere else with an amazing variety (in both milk and dark chocolate). The nuts are far superior than elsewhere. The quality of all products sold is just tops!
