The 5 Best Ballet Schools in Sydney That Build Character and Grace
The 2011 documentary First Position is proof that ballet is not just about pink tutus but also about extreme grit and precision.
That’s exactly why choosing a ballet school is such a serious decision. Ballet is physically demanding and is also a significant financial commitment. You can’t risk learning in the wrong environment.
With so many studios, though, finding the right ballet school in Sydney can feel like trying to nail a perfect triple pirouette on the first day of class.
But don’t worry, we already did the work. Our team spent weeks researching ballet schools and found the best ballet classes that help students actually enter the professional industry. Check them below!
How much does it cost to take a ballet class in Sydney?
It costs at least $18 to take a ballet class in Sydney. This is just an estimate. The actual cost will depend on the ballet school, the kind of class and more.
1. Jiayin Masterclass

Address: Evolution Performing Arts Centre, Level 2/575-597 Pacific Hwy, St Leonards
Contact Details: +61452588914
Operating Hours:
- Monday, Wednesday – 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM
- Sunday – 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Jiayin Masterclass is for anyone seeking elite ballet training in Sydney. This is a studio built for serious dancers who are aiming for competitive and even international stages, not just recreational classes.
We really love their focus on a world-class curriculum recognised across cultures. Jiayin specialises in the Vaganova method, a highly specific and rigorous Russian ballet training style.
We’re also impressed by how they broaden their dancers’ adaptability. They supplement their ballet classes with character dance and contemporary styles to develop well-rounded dancers.
It’s also great that they require all students to take RAD exams. This provides a clear benchmark for progress every year.
Several parents we spoke with said their children feel much more confident during professional auditions after training here. It makes sense given the school’s focus on elite coaching and competition preparation.
Beyond technical coaching, though, we appreciate that the instructors care about their students’ health and safety. They teach stretches and offer helpful advice on preventing muscle strain.
At $30 per hour, the fees are reasonable for the calibre of training offered. It’s just a bummer that they don’t offer trial classes.
Kind, professional, and truly passionate teachers
“We have had a wonderful experience with Jiayin Master ballet since my daughter was transferred there from April 2025. The teachers are kind, professional, and truly passionate about helping each student grow in confidence and skill. Classes are well-structured, supportive, and enjoyable, creating a positive learning environment for dancers of all ages. The school places a strong emphasis on technique, discipline, and artistry while still making lessons fun and encouraging. We have seen such improvement and happiness in our child since joining, and we highly recommend this ballet school to any family looking for quality ballet training in a nurturing atmosphere.”

Step-by-step, result-orientate, tailor-made plan
When my daughter EV switched to Jiayin Master Class from other Institute, I immediately felt the difference! Professionalism was the key word! They had step-by-step result-orientated tailor-made plan for my daughter, aassigned experienced teachers for tuition to help her improve to next level. EV changed her perception for ballet from leasure only to achieving bench mark outcome. She passed her RAD exam which was a surprise to me. And she made many friends there!
Now I could see the benefits of learning at Jiayin, when I see EV walking, standing at her school events, ballet training gives her elegant posture and the confidence in public (as compared to many others). Even when she greets my friends, they could tell she has been on ballet class!
I am happy she has the chance with Jiayin and would highly recommend Jiayin Master Class to anyone when wants benefits and results from ballet.

2. The Teresa Johnson Ballet School

Address: 245 Glenmore Rd, Paddington NSW 2021
Contact Details: +61410423598
Operating Hours: Monday to Saturday – 9 AM to 8:30 PM
The Teresa Johnson Ballet School offers a wide range of programs, making it one of the most inclusive RAD ballet schools in Sydney for all ages.
We were impressed by the “Petite Pointers” program for kids ages 0 to 6. Teaching ballet fundamentals to toddlers requires creativity and patience, and by all accounts, the instructors excel at both.
The “Mum and Me” classes are also unique. They cleverly use props and imaginative play to build coordination, which we found impressive.
For older students, the transition into Junior and Senior classes is very smooth. Pointe work is introduced carefully. That gradual build-up is essential for both safety and technical integrity.
We also appreciate that they cater to the older crowd with their Silver Swans program for adults aged 60+. Regulars we talked with found the classes very informative, and praised the instructors’ thorough demonstrations.
The only caveat is the busy schedule. Because the studio offers multiple styles (tap, jazz, and contemporary), peak afternoon hours can feel crowded.
Positive and supportive environment
“I am a student at the Teresa Johnson ballet school and have been since I was 5 and I absolutely love it there. All the staff are incredible and supportive teachers and have taught me so much throughout my time there. I love coming to dance because it is such a positive environment and I always have so much fun. I would definitely recommend the Teresa Johnson ballet school to anyone who wants to improve their dance skills in a positive and supportive environment.”

My daughter and I highly recommend this beautiful school
“We feel so very fortunate to be apart of The Teresa Johnson Ballet School. Our daughter started at the school when she was 2 ½ years old in the “mum and me” class and now years on she enjoys Ballet, Tap and Jazz classes surrounded by the most talented teachers and lovely group of students.
All the teachers are passionate, professional and extremely caring and they bring out the very best in each student, and the friendships made within the classes are true and lasting friendships. My daughter and I highly recommend this beautiful school.”

3. Sydney Dance Company

Address: Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, Wharf 4, 5/15 Hickson Rd, Dawes Point
Contact Details: +61292214811
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Thursday – 8:30 AM to 9:45 PM
- Friday – 8:30 AM to 8 PM
- Saturday – 8 AM to 5 PM
- Sunday – 8 AM to 3 PM
Sydney Dance Company earned a spot on our list for their flexibility. With more than 75 classes per week, it offers one of the most extensive adult ballet classes in Sydney.
The classes are structured to build both grace and strength, whether you opt for a shorter express session or a full-length class with centre work.
The value for money for the classes and memberships they offer is great too. Their “Unlimited Membership” at $285 a month is a great deal for someone who wants to attend multiple classes weekly.
We also like the “Classes On Demand” feature. The 7-day free trial for their online library also lowers the barrier to entry and allows dancers to assess the quality before committing.
The “Lifestyle Membership” is perfect for busy professionals, covering four classes a month for $85.
That said, their in-person ballet classes during the week can be a bit rushed. A few people said that when they attended an adult class, they found it hard to keep up with the instructor’s pace.
I had a great experience
“Tess Sturman’s Sunday Ballet classes are pure bliss, I will miss them dearly. The studio is beautiful and at an amazing location. I had a great experience taking the Beginners Ballet classes for 2 months :)”

4. Academy Ballet

Address: The Entertainment Quarter, Building 121 Bent St, Moore Park
Contact Details: +61412855295
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Friday – 3 PM to 8 PM
- Saturday – 8 AM to 4 PM
Academy Ballet has a 40-year history, making it a very reliable classical ballet academy in Sydney.
What stood out to us is their “caterpillar to butterfly” philosophy. They focus on students’ emotional and spiritual growth, not just their ballet technique. This is great for building character and discipline that stays with a student long after they stop dancing.
The program is split into clear stages: Minis for the little ones, Primary for those six and up, and a Senior program for teens. This structured progression helps students see a long-term trajectory.
The “Babyrinas” program is particularly popular among parents. Many described it as the perfect, gentle introduction for toddlers. The instructors keep things simple and use engaging props to hold the little ones’ attention.
We also appreciate the availability of Advanced 1 and 2 classes. For students with professional aspirations, access to higher-level training within the same school reduces the need to transfer elsewhere.
However, because they are so established and focused on the RAD grades, their ballet style isn’t very modern.
They bring incredible skill and passion
“Now more than ever, our kids need a place where they can express themselves, form friendships and build confidence. They need to feel safe, nurtured and encouraged to live in the moment, away from screens. Academy Ballet provides all of this and more. It’s such a positive and nurturing environment and Miss Sinead and her wonderful teachers are exceptional. They bring incredible skill and passion to every class and the concerts are pure magic. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Daughter a student since 2020)”

The Teachers are very dedicated and passionate
“Wonderful Ballet School. The Teachers are very dedicated and passionate in teaching the kids. Hannah has been there for 2 years and I’m so excited for the concert this Sunday. I definitely see her grow into a confident girl who is now understand to appreciate art. This school is perfect. It’s not just about dancing or ballet shoes. It’s a life long learning, team work, appreciation, discipline, hard work and consistency. 🌈”

5. Pretty Little Ballerinas

Address: 1/405 Crown St, Surry Hills
Contact Details: +61280361709
Operating Hours: Open 24 Hours
Pretty Little Ballerinas, the name says it all, but they offer more than just cute classes for tiny tots. While they are famous for their toddler ballet classes that Sydney parents rave about, they also teach children up to age 15.
For the tots, we love that the 2-3-year-old “Baby Ballet” classes allow parents to join in.
One mom told us her daughter felt very comfortable in the class due to the instructor’s patience.
As the kids get older, they move into full-time ballet courses and the RAD syllabus. The classes for 5-15-year-olds last up to 120 minutes and focus on serious topics like core strength, anatomy, and body awareness.
We think the inclusion of “Self Correction” in their teaching is also brilliant because it teaches kids how to think for themselves.
They also offer on-demand classes for $35 a month, which we found helpful for practising at home or for catching up after missing a session.
That said, the school is definitely more geared toward the younger demographic. So, serious teenage dancers and adults will have to look elsewhere.
Do not hesitate to try a class
“My little girl started at Pretty Little Ballerina’s when she was 15 months old. It was so refreshing to find a ballet school that welcomed her with open arms at this age! So grateful they acknowledge that children all develop at a different pace and not letting their age stop them from being accepted to enroll. My daughter absolutely loves going every week! It’s been great seeing her learn to follow class structure, learn about discipline with gentle guidance from Miss Tia and see her grow in how to use her body! It’s great fun for the parents in the 2-3 year class as well because you dance together with them and it’s amazing to see them all so happy! Do not hesitate to trial a class!”

I highly recommend Pretty Little Ballerinas
“I came across Pretty Little Ballerinas in Surry Hills after some research on the best ballet schools for for my 3.5 years old daughter. I am absolutely thrilled with our experience! My daughter looks forward to every single lesson. We have had the pleasure of having Ms Tia as our teacher. She is loving, patient, professional and most importantly, the kids absolutely adore her! The dance concert at the end of the year is an absolute highlight and showcases just how much the little ballerinas learn 🙂 I highly recommend Pretty Little Ballerinas to any parent whose child is interested in learning ballet! Thank you Ms Tia and the brilliant team at PLB!”
