The 5 Best Fabric Shops in Sydney That Local Crafters Swear By

Fabric Selection and Quality: We selected shops offering a range of fabric types, including basic, speciality, and designer lines. Those with consistent fabric quality based on the feel and fibre content ranked higher.

Purchasing Policies: We assessed each store’s return and exchange policies and shipping options. We favoured those with flexible and clear purchasing policies, so it would be easier for buyers to shop for fabrics.

Pricing: We also considered value for money. Those with competitive prices, discounts, and bulk pricing stood out. Bonus if they have loyalty incentives for their customers.

Customer Service: We prioritised fabric shops with responsive, helpful staff, whether in-store or by phone. We prefer employees who are knowledgeable about fabrics, fibres, and projects, so they can give recommendations to customers.

My sister decided to start her first sewing project after learning the basics in school. She already has the needles and little extras like buttons. All she just needs is the most important part: fabric.

She’s set on working with cotton and velvet. Unfortunately, the fabric store near us just closed its doors for good. So she asked me to help her find a store that can be her go-to spot, somewhere with plenty of options.

To make sure I recommend the very best, I asked my team to help me visit multiple fabric stores in Sydney. We checked their selections, spoke with the staff about the prices and quality, and even chatted with some customers.

Below is the list of top fabric shops that stood out to us for their variety, value, and expert guidance.

How much do fabrics cost in Sydney?

Fabrics in Sydney may cost $5 to $100 per metre, depending on the material. Premium fabrics like wool, velvet, and silk are more expensive than basic fabrics. Those used for upholstery or outdoor projects are even more pricey.

When you sew often enough, you start wanting more than just bolts of predictable fabric. You want pieces that can help you play with design more, something a little rarer and kinder to the planet. That’s what led us to The Remnant Warehouse.

This Sydney fabric shop was recommended to us by many local crafters for its deadstock and remnant fabrics. They offer surplus and designer leftover fabrics, like wools, silks, and cottons.

And since their stock is sourced from excess, buyers can access limited runs at more accessible prices.

They even have discount bins, where you can find fabrics at reduced prices. This is perfect for students, budget-conscious sewists, or just anyone experimenting with new projects.

When we visited, we really appreciated the staff. They were very knowledgeable and helpful, offering us recommendations when we discussed our plans. Customers shared that the staff even give some care instructions before you go.

Their store also caters to international orders, which is another huge plus.

The only thing to note is that they have limited stock. They’re more on one-off remnants, and once they’re sold, you can’t get another batch of them.

Pros

  • Wide and unique fabric selection
  • Specialises in deadstock and remnant fabrics
  • Lower-priced products
  • Values sustainability
  • With discounts available
  • Can order online domestically and internationally
  • Knowledgeable and kind staff

Cons

  • Limited availability

Great customer service

“Such a great service. Can’t fault it at all! Morna was exceptional in her assistance. She  went out of her way to test some material for me, ensuring it glowed under a black light before allowing me to make an online purchase. Items were carefully packaged and delivered in a timely manner. Thank you for such a smooth experience!”

Long-time crafters will likely already be familiar with Tessuti Fabrics. Having been in business since 1992, the store has built a solid reputation among local sewists for quality materials and reliable service.

We really like family-run businesses, and Tessuti is one of them. Oftentimes, their service feels more personal than that of big store chains.

In this case, it shows how they deal with customers. From what we’ve seen and heard, Tessuti’s staff are polite, approachable, and genuinely know their fabrics. If you’re unsure of what works best for a project, they’re happy to talk it through.

The store itself is a pleasure to browse. It’s beautifully laid out, arranged by colour and fabric types. We love how they made fabric shopping easier, especially for beginners.

They also have an online store with free shipping if you reached particular number of orders.

Overall, service is consistently solid. The only small thing we’d suggest is double-checking tiny items like buttons before you leave. There have been some mentions of miscounts.

Pros

  • Excellent customer service
  • With a large selection of fabrics
  • Well-organised store
  • Online store offers free shipping thresholds
  • Well-priced fabrics
  • Offers sewing classes

Cons

  • Occasional miscounts of small items

Several avid sewists pointed us toward The Fabric Store when we asked where they source their speciality textiles in Sydney. After taking a closer look, we understood why it’s such a favourite for many.

Their range goes beyond just basic cottons and linings. They stock merino wool jerseys, quality viscose, and a selection of exclusive deadstocks that are hard to find in generic fabric shops in Sydney.

We also appreciate their focus on sustainability. By sourcing deadstock and designer excess, they help reduce textile waste.

The physical store is awesome too. It’s neat, well-organised, and visually appealing. Fabrics are displayed in a way that makes browsing easy and not overwhelming.

If you choose to shop online, they also offer loyalty points. This is really helpful, especially if you’re planning to make regular purchases or place large orders over time.

However, their online selection isn’t as extensive as their in-store selection. If you’re after something specific, you might find more options by visiting in person.

Pros

  • High-quality fabric selection
  • With merino wool jerseys and speciality textiles
  • Regularly gets new arrivals
  • Focused on sustainability
  • Offers loyalty points for online customers
  • Supports international shipping
  • Supportive staff

Cons

  • Online selection is smaller than in-store
  • Higher pricing

Nice and neat store

“I went here with my friend last time looking for fabric for our school project. The store was nice and neat. I like how the staff lady there was so helpful and so kind and cheerful. What a wonderful experience. I really recommend to come here if you are looking for fabric . Ten out of ten !!!”

-Ms. Dahye Lee, Google Review

“Have really had some of the best customer service here lately. Thank you so much for being so helpful! The most beautiful fabrics and such great prices.

It really should be your first stop when planning to make anything!”

Rosebery Fabrics caught our attention because of its clear niche. While most fabric stores in Sydney focus on dressmaking and quilting cottons, this shop specialises in outdoor and other high-performance fabrics.

They began by selling Sunbrella acrylic canvas used for outdoor awnings and cushions, then expanded into marine vinyl upholstery. If you’re working on patio furniture or boat seating, this store might be right up your alley.

We were also impressed by the calibre of brands they carry, including InStyle, Warwick, and Charles Parsons.

A big part of the store’s appeal for us is the owner, Lee, who brings over 25 years of experience as an upholsterer. That background shows in how he advises customers.

Many customers often praise how patient and generous he is with his time, answering detailed questions and even making himself available on short notice when needed.

It’s reassuring to know the advice you’re getting comes from real project experience and not just sales training.

Rosebery’s Fabrics also has an online store too, with discounts that can be especially helpful for bulk purchases.

Just keep in mind that this is a specialised shop, so you won’t find a range of basic dress fabrics here.

Pros

  • Upholsterer owner
  • Specialises in industrial, upholstery, and outdoor fabrics
  • Features Sunbrella and heavy-duty textiles
  • Accommodating owner
  • Ideal for both local and remote buyers

Cons

  • No dress fabrics

Incredibly helpful staff

“We are absolutely thrilled with our vintage kidney-shaped lounge — it’s perfect for our tiny home. Lee was incredibly helpful, making himself available at short notice over the weekend and guiding us through choosing the right fabric for the reupholstery. He was also endlessly patient, accommodating my many changes of mind and answering countless questions along the way. Lee is a true craftsman, and I’ll definitely be using him again for future projects. I can’t recommend him highly enough.”

-Ms. Camille Gunduz, Google Review

Convenient shop location

“Was pleasantly surprised to find a shop so close locally with such a wide range of marine vinyls. I didn’t want to purchase online so I could see and feel the texture and pliability of the fabrics in person. Lee was super helpful and has such a great selection (and price point!) Walked away with 8 new colours to add to my new padded collars range. Great hidden gem of a shop in the Inner West”

Rainbow Fabrics is another long-standing local fabric shop in Sydney that we can’t just ignore. It offers a mix of natural and synthetic fabrics.

What really draws people in is the pricing. Many sewists and crafters we spoke to mentioned that you can find budget-friendly fabrics here without sacrificing too much on quality.

It does take a bit of browsing, but if you’re willing to look through the shelves, you’re likely to come across something that fits both your project and your budget.

Their collection is fairly varied too. They have textiles such as cotton, satin, and even velvet. They also sell organza and lycra runs, perfect for everyday projects.

What also stood out to us during our visit was the service. They may not be a big team and a big shop, but they offer a more personalised assistance. They take the time to answer questions, offer advice, and guide you without rushing.

We also didn’t find them salesy, which many customers we spoke with echoed.

The only thing we noticed is that their space is a bit cramped, unlike other shops we encountered.

Pros

  • Wide range of textiles
  • Good, affordable prices
  • With discounts and closing-down sales available
  • Accommodating staff and owner

Cons

  • Cramped store

Friendly staff

“Great prices and friendly staff! Always a highlight to shop here. Sad to see it go but I’ll enjoy the shop as much as I can :)”
