The 5 Best Ballet Classes in Sydney for On Pointe Instructions

Instructor Expertise: We looked closely at the background of the instructors to ensure you learn proper classical foundations. Having teachers with professional stage experience makes a massive difference in how they guide your technique.

Class Availability: We checked how welcoming each studio is to different experience levels and age groups. A great space should offer clear pathways for both casual adult hobbyists and serious pre-professional teenagers.

Schedule Flexibility & Booking Options: We evaluated the flexibility of scheduling and booking options to fit a modern, busy routine. Studios that offer casual drop-in setups and structured packages scored much higher in our books.

Training Experience & Studio Atmosphere: We analysed the value and overall atmosphere provided during the training sessions. We prioritised spaces that build real confidence and avoid overly stiff, intimidating environments.

Finding a supportive environment makes a world of difference if you want to return to the barre or start as a complete beginner. Thankfully, we have fantastic dance studios offering the best ballet classes in Sydney that can teach you the right techniques.

To help you find the perfect fit, we’ve rounded up spots that offer quality training and supportive environments for all skill levels. It’s time to put on your tutu and embrace the stage!

Sydney Dance Company drops the rigid dress code entirely, so you can just turn up in comfortable workout gear and even use basic socks instead of buying expensive shoes.

And if you’re an advanced dancer, you get to move to the gorgeous sound of live piano music, which helps you connect deeply with your phrasing.

Just keep in mind that they don’t have separate classes just for pointe work. You’ll need to get daily permission from the instructor before putting your pointe shoes on.

Pros

  • Structured beginner courses available
  • Live piano music for advanced levels
  • Relaxed and welcoming dress code

Cons

Great teachers and modern facilities

Adult classes here are great. The teachers are very experienced in their fields. Having a live pianist for some ballet classes are a nice touch. The online booking system is very convenient and signing into class upon arrival is very smooth. The facilities at their new location are nice and modern, with the air conditioning a very welcome addition.

Need more absolute beginner classes

I do think “absolute beginner” classes should be available for all kinds of dance…. Not just Ballet. Attended lyrical beginner class today and found it hard to catch up after warmup…. however other people seemed to know what they’re doing but surely you can tell they can never be beginners. No way

Danceworks Sydney stands out as the only spot in the city offering formal assessments for mature students who want to receive diplomas.

In particular, they use the comprehensive Vaganova method and a specialised training system called Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) to build incredible core alignment and deep muscle memory.

You can even try floor barre exercises lying flat on the ground to perfect your shape without stressing your joints.

Younger students can also enjoy a fantastic split program that balances intense training with the Australian Performing Arts Grammar School (APGS).

However, preparing for the formal adult exams requires a massive time commitment of at least two classes a week for a full year.

Also, keep in mind that beginners must book a private lesson before trying group pointe work.

Pros

  • Academic partnerships for young dancers
  • Incorporates PBT and floor barre methods
  • Diploma pathways for adult students
  • Comprehensive Vaganova method

Cons

  • High time commitment for exam preparation
  • Private lesson required for beginner group pointe

Supportive and inclusive environment

I started ballet at 33 years old in February this year, something I’ve wanted to do since I was a little girl, and I am so happy I found Danceworks! It is a truly wonderful, supportive, inclusive, and encouraging environment for all dancers, which is just what I needed as an introverted stay at home mum. The classes at Danceworks have helped my confidence so much, the teachers make it such a beautiful and supportive  place to learn and grow.

Inclusive, friendly, and welcoming classes

Love attending Danceworks Adult Ballet classes. The classes are inclusive, friendly, and welcoming, and you feel supported from the moment you walk in. Olivia and all the teachers are amazing!! knowledgeable, encouraging, and incredibly patient. They give clear, helpful corrections and directions that make each class enjoyable. I always leave feeling inspired and uplifted. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to learn or return to ballet as an adult.

One of our picks is Julia Classical Ballet Coaching Academy, which is run by an elite dancer who brings a brilliant, professional European style right into the studio rooms.

The training here relies heavily on the detailed Vaganova syllabus for kids, using longer exercises that push your strength and help you see rapid progress.

They also have a fantastic history of coaching older beginners, including helping male students who started late land major overseas company contracts.

Plus, there’s a wonderful focus on individual artistry here, completely busting the myth that you need one single perfect body type to succeed.

Just keep in mind that the studio environment demands serious individual drive, so they might not suit someone wanting a casual hobby. Also, their private one-to-one coaching is highly selective.

Pros

  • Led by a former international professional
  • Proven track record with elite placements
  • Authentic company-style Vaganova training
  • Individual artistry focus

Cons

  • Requires extreme personal dedication
  • Highly selective private coaching placement

My daughter has made incredible progress since joining Ms. Julia’s ballet class. Julia is not only highly professional but also deeply passionate about ballet and passing her skill to the young dancers. Her teaching goes beyond just technique, she inspires the children with discipline, grace, and the right attitude towards learning and life. We feel so fortunate to have found such a dedicated and nurturing teacher. Highly recommended!

Plus, the faculty includes highly qualified instructors with diplomas, ensuring every student learns in a safe and supportive space.

One of our friends who goes here loves the exceptional enrichment classes that nurture every need and age. For instance, you’ll find specialised Pilates for dancers, pointe classes, and teacher training programs.

Children can even start as early as age three and follow a clear path all the way through advanced adult classes.

The main downside is that their prestigious affiliate training program with The Royal Ballet School is strictly invite-only, which means eager students can’t simply sign up on their own.

Pros

  • Fantastic variety of diverse dance styles
  • Classes available for all age groups
  • Advanced enrichment and teacher pathways
  • Top-notch faculty with advanced diplomas

Cons

  • Invite-only restrictions for elite program

Reignited my daughter’s love for ballet

My 12 year old daughter joined The Ballet Class mid year 2023 after attending another school for 7 years. She used to tread going to her ballet class but not anymore. The Ballet Class has reignited her love for ballet. She now proactively practices at home on her own initiative. I can see excellent improvement in a very short period of time. I would highly recommend The Ballet Class.

Professional school with excellent opportunities

Amazing school. Very professional corrections, and there are many teachers that give excellent advice. Teachers are clearly carefully chosen as all of them have many years of experience. There are so many opportunities for all different kinds of dancers. It doesn’t matter what type of dance, or your level, The Ballet Class has the perfect class for you. I would absolutely recommend them to everyone, whether they have tried dance before or not. I have been taking classes with them for nearly 10 years, and have never regretted any of it. Thank you so much!

We like Tanya Pearson Academy for blending artistic training with modern technology, which gives young dancers an incredible advantage in the competitive studio world.

The teachers here use advanced tools, like video analysis software, to break down movements and help students polish their technique safely.

For those looking to go pro, they offer a personalised full-time path starting at age 11 that perfectly balances intense dancing with regular schooling.

They also run casual drop-in adult classes with exciting performance opportunities twice a year. You can even earn a nationally recognised diploma that counts as finishing high school, as well as a dedicated postgraduate program to prepare for major auditions.

However, joining the regular part-time academy requires passing a selective audition, which restricts accessibility.

Pros

  • Combination of artistic training with modern technology
  • Uses video analysis software
  • Structured full-time pathway for aspiring dancers
  • Nationally recognised diplomas

Cons

  • Strict audition entry for part-time academy

Excellent adult ballet program

Tanya Pearson Academy introduced Adult Ballet in July 2023. I have been a regular since – clocking up over 250 classes! They provide levels from Beg to Intermediate, and we have the opportunity to perform yearly. It is my happy place! TPA provide state of the art facilities, exceptional teachers and I’ve recently taken advantage of their in-house specialist Physio. It is a joy to dance in a community blending children, full/time pre professionals and adults who all love ballet. I highly recommend TPA and look forward to meeting you at the barre sometime soon.
