5 Best Oncologists in Sydney for Effective Treatment Planning

  • Experience in Specific Cancer Types: We selected oncologists and cancer centres with expertise in treating different cancers, like breast, lung, and gynaecological cancers. Those with deeper focus areas and effective treatment plans stood out.
  • Hospital Affiliation: We prioritised those with hospital and cancer centre affiliations, proving that they have access to advanced equipment and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Patient Support: We also looked at how each provider supports patients emotionally and practically throughout their treatment. We considered their communication style, availability of oncology staff, and overall patient experience.
  • Access to Advanced Treatments: We take a look at whether they offer modern treatment options, like targeted therapy, robotic surgery, or immunotherapy. Those who have access to these treatments ranked higher.

One of the toughest challenges to deal with is a cancer diagnosis. It’s stressful and will really take a toll on your emotional health.

However, aside from dealing with the diagnosis, getting the right oncologists is another problem. That’s where the journey gets even more overwhelming because not all hospitals and centres offer the same level of care.

To help make the process easier, we’ve searched for the best oncologists in Sydney. From private centres to major public hospitals, we’ve done the research for you.

See the list below to help you narrow down your options.

How much does an oncologist in Sydney charge?

An oncologist in Sydney may charge from $150 to $300 for an initial consultation. Follow-ups may cost between $90 to $150. The exact and final amount depends on whether you use a public or private health system.

One thing we like about Northern Haematology & Oncology Group is its strong team composed of oncologists, surgeons, and radiologists.

We think this setup really shaped how they provide effective cancer care to their patients. They don’t just rely on a single specialist; instead, they discuss each case across different disciplines to create a more thorough treatment plan.

Also, it’s a plus that they’re linked with the San Integrated Cancer Centres. This means they have access to modern facilities and structured cancer pathways.

We also noticed that they offer clinical trials, which can be another strong point to consider, especially for those who are open to newer treatments.

Their broader support system is worth highlighting, too. They have psychology services, inpatient oncology care, and other support that can help patients cope with the process. We like that they have it under one roof, providing convenience.

If there are things to take note of, it’s that their pricing is on the higher side. Also, getting an appointment with their senior oncologists may take longer than expected.

Pros

  • Strong multidisciplinary team
  • Affiliated with San Integrated Cancer Centre
  • Has access to clinical trials
  • Holistic support services
  • Dedicated oncology inpatient ward
  • Convenience integration of other services

Cons

  • Higher costs
  • Longer wait times for senior oncologists

2. Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre

Operating Hours: Monday – Friday: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre stands out because it’s part of a large public and government-funded network.

Being connected with a large public hospital means patients have access to inpatient services, emergency care, and specialist departments.

Also, from seeing where they are, they’re very much like a whole system type of setup rather than a boutique clinic. It’s because they have oncology that can connect to radiology, surgery, and palliative care.

Another clear advantage is access. Since they’re part of the public system, expect that most of their services are bulk-billed or covered by Medicare. In fact, patients shared that this is a big help, reducing the financial barrier for them.

The fact that they’re also connected to Liverpool Hospital for academic research and clinical trials is another bonus, as they’re updated with complex or advanced cases.

The main downside? Waiting times can be longer due to the public system setup. On top of that, patients may not always see the same doctor throughout their treatment. This can make continuity of care feel less consistent.

Pros

  • Comprehensive public cancer care system
  • Access to full hospital services
  • Combines oncology with other services
  • Access to academic research and clinical trials
  • Bulk-billed or Medicare-covered services

Cons

  • Longer wait times
  • Less continuity with a single doctor

Caring team

“I have nothing but positive feedback about my treatment at the centre, from my pre surgery appointments, the surgery itself, and post-op. The doctors and nursing staff who looked after me were friendly, professional, and caring. They explained to me what the process was as we went along, raised me up during some negative moments, and even laughed at my jokes (well, most of them anyway!).

I feel very fortunate to have been referred to the clinic when my cancer was diagnosed.

Thank you to all my doctors and support staff at the Clinic.”

If there’s one thing that sets Icon Cancer Centre Revesby apart, it’s that they offer radiation oncology and medical oncology under one roof.

Having both services in one facility makes the treatment process complete and less fragmented. That means you can access chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy without bouncing between different centres.

Also, it’s a big advantage that they have an advanced radiation technology. This includes highly targeted systems, which result in more precise radiation delivery.

Patients also love their advanced setup, saying it helps minimise damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

Their multidisciplinary team is another thing we favoured the most. It’s important that they have input from multiple specialists, instead of a single doctor.

We commend that they prioritise comfort and continuity of care as well. Patients generally stay with the same specialist throughout their treatment journey.

For those who are in South-West Sydney, their convenient location is also a bonus.

On the flipside, note that it’s a smaller centre compared to the bigger oncology units of other centres. Their high demand is also something to consider, as it can sometimes affect appointment scheduling.

Pros

  • Offers medical and radiation oncology
  • Uses an advanced radiation technology
  • Multidisciplinary team
  • Patient continuity model
  • Access to systemic therapies
  • Convenient location

Cons

  • Smaller centre
  • High demand

A/Prof Felix Chan caught our attention because of his highly specialised role as a gynaecological oncologist.

He’s very focused on cancers affecting the cervix, uterus, and other gynecological areas, which is great news because not all cater to such areas.

We’re also impressed with his background as one of the pioneers of robotic pelvic surgery in Australia.

Aside from that, he’s also experienced in minimally invasive surgery, which is a big plus if you’re looking for quicker recovery times.

We also appreciate Dr Chan’s strong connection across multiple major hospitals. That means that you can still access care across different hospital settings, depending on the treatment plan.

Another standout? It’s his surgical capability that can handle even the most complex procedures, like radical prostatectomy. This gives us confidence that we have something to turn to in cases of advanced or high-risk cancers.

Just a heads up, though, that he’s not suitable for other cancer types beyond gynaecological oncology. Costs can be higher as well, especially in private settings like his.

Pros

  • Highly specialised in gynaecological cancers
  • Pioneer in robotic surgery in Australia
  • Experienced in minimally invasive surgery
  • Works across multiple major hospitals
  • Strong background
  • Broad surgical capability

Cons

  • Specialised in gynaecological oncology only
  • Can be expensive

Talented surgeon

“As a Registered Nurse with 27 years’ experience, I highly recommend A/Prof Chan. Not only is he an extremely talented surgeon, he has so much knowledge and experience in this field.  He gives you his honest opinion but delivers it in such a kind way. My recovery from my robotic hysterectomy, even shocked me. Hardly any pain, only Panadol needed. He explained everything in great detail, and nothing was ever too much trouble. The ladies that work in his rooms are also incredible at what they do!! I would give Dr Chan 10 stars if I could.”

-Ms. Tanya Bailey, Google Review

Honest and caring oncologist

“I cannot thank Prof Felix Chan enough for the care he gave me. After seeing several gynaecologists who left me feeling disappointed and even suggested a hysterectomy that I didn’t need, I had almost lost hope. Then I found Prof Chan, and everything changed. He was honest, caring, and explained my surgery so clearly that I finally felt at ease. The operation went so smoothly, and it was clear that I was in the hands of a true expert. His exceptional skill, knowledge, and compassion gave me complete trust in him. I am truly grateful finding Prof Felix Chan has been such a blessing, and I would recommend him to anyone seeking the very best care.”

Professor Manish Patel impressed us with his specialty in urological cancer surgery. His clients are those with prostate, bladder, and testicular cancers.

From what we’ve seen, there aren’t many oncologists specialising in this area, and we’re glad that we found Dr Patel.

One of the strongest points Dr Patel carries is his robotic surgery experience. There’s no wonder that his patients note faster recovery time and more accurate treatment.

Also, we like how he genuinely cares for his patients. He guides patients through different treatment pathways, depending on the suitability. In short, he doesn’t just recommend a treatment that could benefit him in terms of costs.

The fact that he operates in multiple consultation locations also proves that he wants to make his service more accessible to those who need it.

However, since there aren’t many urological oncologists like him, expect that he’s in very high demand. Getting appointments can take time.

Pros

  • Exclusive focus on urological cancers
  • Strong experience in robotic surgery
  • Continuity of care
  • Access to multiple treatment pathways
  • Multiple consultation locations
  • Patient education focus
  • Experienced in radical cancer surgeries

Cons

  • High demand for specialist care

Expert knowledge and skills

“I was referred  to Professor Patel after a excellerated PSA reading over a 2 year period. After examination Prof. Patel performed a biopsy promptly which showed a stage 2 cancer. A PET Scan confirmed & Prof. Patel explained to me my options. I decided Robotic Radical Prostectomy was my preferred choice. I was fortunate in his advice as pathology showed it to be agressive. His expert knowledge & skills ultimately saved me from it spreading elsewhere. He is a caring efficient surgeon & I HIGHLY recommend him as a practitioner. His staff & follow-up care make sure  you well looked after.”

-Mr. Walter Desmond, Google Review

Superb surgeon

“Professor Patel is a superb surgeon. I came to him on a recommendation, unhappy with my current treatment for prostate cancer, and am very glad I did.

Everything was straightforward and clear. When after a few years, and a couple of low impact biopsies, he advised the prostate’s removal, I had no hesitation. The operation has been very successful, with minimal after effects. I am thrilled with the result and strongly suggest anyone in the same situation see this talented man and his team.”
