The 5 best truck rentals in Sydney for a hassle-free moving day

Types of trucks available: Sometimes you just need to move a few pieces of furniture, and sometimes you need to move the contents of an entire house. We gave plus points to businesses that offer different types and sizes of rental trucks.

Ease of booking: We prioritised businesses that make the booking process easy, such as via a quick online form. We also awarded points to businesses that allow for short-notice (same-day) booking.

Rental truck pricing: We looked for rental companies with transparent pricing, no hidden fees, discounts, and options for renting either short- or long-term.

Customer reviews: We aimed to find businesses with as many positive online reviews as possible, especially those mentioning good customer service and high vehicle quality.

One of the most hectic periods of my life was having to move houses on short notice back in 2021. I had 3 months to find a new place, uproot everything, and transfer all my belongings and furniture.

It was a stressful few months, and I was on the verge of pulling my hair out, but at least I had help. It wouldn’t have been possible without a truck rental service to haul all my junk for me.

I’ll help you skip right to the easy part (and save your hair) with this list of the best truck rentals in Sydney.

How much does a truck rental cost in Sydney?

Truck rentals in Sydney cost around $50 per day (for a utility vehicle) to $93 per day (for a large enclosed truck). You may have to pay a refundable $300–$400 deposit. Interstate travel fees, handling fees, and other miscellaneous fees may add another $100 or so.

Avis Car & Truck Rental provides rental vehicles for anything from sedans to trucks, and even electric vehicles. They maintain 220 pickup locations all across Australia — Sydney, Perth, Canberra, and more — and are accessible from city centres and airports.

Rent various truck types for a few hours, by the day, month, or even longer. Depending on your needs, you can choose between covered or open trucks, and even refrigerated vans if you’re transporting foodstuffs.

Different truck sizes are available as well: from 4.2–8.5 metres in storage dimensions. If you’d prefer something with four-wheel drive, these are available too.

Avis also provides convenience by allowing their customers to book a rental truck via their website or mobile app. Equipment such as ramps, luggage trailers, trolleys, and other accessories that make your move easier is also available.

Unfortunately, you can’t get quick pricing estimates for truck rentals on the Avis website. You’ll need to start filling in a reservation form before you can get a quote.

Pros

  • Many types and sizes of trucks available
  • Refrigerated van rentals
  • Over 200 pickup locations
  • Open every day

Cons

  • Must make a reservation to view pricing
  • Some reviews mention poor customer service

Avis will be my first choice from here on

“I had amazing service from Georgie at the desk in the domestic terminal. She went above and beyond to look after myself and my children. She made the booking process easy, provided options and explanations, and made us feel welcome.”

– Keiran Bartlett, Google review

I highly recommend using this rental company

“The staff at pickup and drop off were extremely professional and efficient. The process was a smooth one and whenever I called them to ask a question they answer the call promptly and were able to provide answers in a reasonable time.”

Budget Australia is a car and truck rental service with over 180 pickup locations across Australia. They offer various types and sizes of rental vehicles that are great for small and medium-sized businesses, or even film and production crews and their equipment.

To get a feel for their services, we gave them a call and asked about rental trucks. We were surprised at how big of a truck we could rent if we wanted to, like 8.5-metre flatbed trucks with separate crew cabs, and 2-tonne freezer trucks available for use.

The staff member on the phone even reminded us that we could rent furniture trailers or refrigerated trailers if we needed to transfer food items or anything that needed to stay cold.

What’s more, their trucks are protected by 24-hour assistance in case of mechanical breakdowns on the road. It was a relief to hear this, because the last thing we’d want is a truck breakdown in the middle of a big move.

We did see a few online reviews mentioning bad customer service and poor vehicle quality, but these were few and far between compared to users’ good experiences.

Pros

  • Large and varied truck fleet
  • Lots of moving accessories available
  • 24-hour breakdown assistance

Cons

  • Inconsistent service and vehicle quality

Thank you for the excellent service

“I recently hired a truck from this place to move my home, and I wanted to share my experience. Everything went smoothly, and the process was very efficient.”

– Moni Nazari, Google review

Very helpful staff

“This was the most affordable I could find to rent a truck. We ran into a problem about how to use the lift-ramp and they talked us through on the phone. Very helpful.”

3. Ute Van Hire Sydney

Address: Metro Petroleum Blacktown, 69 Richmond Rd, Blacktown

Phone: 61 28613 3312

Business hours: 24/7 (depends on location)

Website

Ute Van Hire Sydney rents out vehicles ranging from utility vehicles and vans, to large multi-tonne trucks for heavy-duty moving. They run several offices serving multiple locations around Sydney.

We learned that you can rent up to a 3-tonne truck with a fully-enclosed cargo area — this is larger than most other trucks we found in our search. It would be able to move enough items to fit a small house!

Even better, renters are permitted to drive it with just a regular car license.

Slightly smaller utility vehicles and vans are also available. Rental time frames range from 2 hours up to a week, or daily for large trucks.

We appreciated seeing some quick rental price estimates on the Ute Van Hire Sydney site; few other companies provided this information upfront. We got one of their staff members on the phone, and they advised us about the best rates for the time frames we had in mind.

You can rent a truck by sending Ute Van Hire Sydney an email, or calling them. They accept company credit card payments, and can work with you to figure out the best deal for your needs.

Pros

  • Up to 3-tonne truck available for rental
  • Pricing estimates immediately visible
  • 24-hour roadside assistance

Cons

  • Limited social media presence
  • Must pay an upfront security deposit ($400)

Orana Car & Truck Rental rents out vehicles, including large trucks, in Sydney and Brisbane.

Their offerings include sedans, small and medium-sized vans, utility vehicles, and hybrid cars for individual or corporate use.

The business performs regular maintenance on its fleet (the average vehicle age is just 18 months), so you’re assured it’s in tip-top shape.

You can also book larger trucks with storage areas over 4 metres long.

You might be able to get these trucks on short notice — same day or next-day bookings — but it’s best to call Orana and check availability. We thought these were a pretty good deal, starting at $93 per day.

Orana also offers accessories such as trolleys and blankets for use with trucks, which help you load items onto the trucks and protect them in transit.

To book a vehicle, you’ll be asked to present certain documents such as proof of address (depending on which Orana branch you rent from). Note that Orana rentals require a $500 initial deposit, which was a little higher than other places we checked.

Pros

  • All sizes of vans and trucks available for rent
  • Pricing estimates available
  • Rentals and business support available every day
  • Long business history; lots of good reviews

Cons

  • High initial deposit
  • Additional paperwork required for certain rentals

Highly recommended

“Used a truck to move house. Clean, good size, and good value. Angela was great on the phone.”

– Finali Gotta, Google review

They are the best around!

“The trucks are clean and well maintained and the rental costs are very affordable. There has been a bit of a price increase recently, however it is in my opinion, well justified as you simply can’t get anything remotely close to this value. The staff are also amazing!”

In most cases, a standard Australian car license will be enough to drive these vehicles.

SIXT offers pickup vans, compact and high-roof vans, and large trucks, allowing you to choose between automatic or manual transmission. Feel free to call for guidance on what you need; we found the staff to be friendly and helpful on the phone.

We did learn that the mandatory initial deposits can get quite high, especially if you’re renting larger vehicles. For exact pricing, you’ll need to get in touch with the team over the phone.

Pros

  • Long business hours; open every day

  • 24-hour roadside assistance (with additional fee)
